At Birchwood we are VERY proud of our Food for Life 'Gold Menu'.
We are most certainly the first Primary School in Suffolk, and possibly the first in East Anglia, to achieve this important milestone in our quest for good quality food in our School.
There is heavily laid down criteria for this Gold Menu. Farm to Fork plays a big part along with Organic produce and locally sourced wherever possible. For instance Caterlink has now forged a relationship with the local bakers "Duncans Butchers & Bakery" in The Square at Martlesham Heath which supplies the bread. Also there must be commitment to trace ability of the meals they serve. The meat dishes are freshly prepared on site and made with Red Tractor/Farm Assured fresh meat. Caterlink are committed to using ingredients with assured provenance from local and regional suppliers. They use produce with high standards of animal welfare – for example, RSPCA Freedom Food Free Range Eggs, Marine Stewardship Approved (MSC) fish and Fair Trade bananas. Along with this, the pupils will be growing some of their own fruit and vegetables for the Chef to cook for their School dinners.
