The way spelling is taught and assessed has changed. This term we are using a new spelling scheme which embraces the knowledge of spelling conventions – patterns and rules. The children will no longer be required to learn a list of words for a weekly test; instead, we will focus more on the spelling patterns and rules. These will be taught and revisited in class across the week and culminate with a short dictation on a Friday. This dictation will include words where the children must apply the rules learned across the week. For example, we may focus on the sound ‘igh,’ within words and the dictation would contain words with that spelling chain eg – mightily, sighted, lightly etc.
