Food For Life
The Soil Association's Food for Life programme is all about transforming food culture. It is about making good food the easy choice for everyone – making healthy, tasty and sustainable meals the norm for all to enjoy, reconnecting pupils with where their food comes from, teaching them how it’s grown and cooked, and championing the importance of well-sourced ingredients.
Food for Life at Birchwood
We are very proud to be one of only 15 schools nationwide to have been awarded gold Food for Life status. At Birchwood, we have worked hard with our caterers, Caterlink, to provide gold standard school meals with a self service salad bar and a restaurant style dining environment. We have a thriving school garden overseen by our enthusiastic Head Gardeners. Our bountiful harvest helps to supply the school kitchen and our cookery school as well as having some produce left over to sell to the school community! Our cookery school facility enables all year groups to have cookery lessons which may be linked to class topics or be more skills based. We also cook jams and chutneys to preserve our produce and to sell at our annual Farmers' Market - a time to celebrate local produce with neighbouring businesses. We celebrate our farming heritage, linking with Suffolk Foodhall, local farmers and farms and of course looking after our own chickens!
