School Council

Intent

In our role as School Councillors we aim to:

*support charities and those that need help

*help to keep our school grounds and local area litter free

*listen to our friends and help to make our school even better

*help to plan and celebrate special events such as Remembrance Day, Children in Need and Christmas Jumper Day

*manage our school Lost Property.

Implementation

At Birchwood we have a thriving School Council.  Each class is represented by 2 Councillors whom have gone through a rigorous application process and been elected by their class mates.  Our School Councillors wear their School Council badges with enormous pride!

School Council meet regularly and we share our work by leading whole school assemblies.  We work on projects led by pupil voice and over the last few years have implemented our 2K a day initiative and designed and fund raised for a school pond.  As School Councillors we are responsible for monthly litter picks and lost property.   We organise important fundraising events supporting charities often close to the school community such as Comic Relief and toys for Christmas for Great Ormond Street Hospital.  We also champion British values by leading activities linked to national events such as Remembrance Day and the Platinum Jubilee.

Impact

As School Councillors we are secure in our role and clear in our vision of how to help Birchwood become even better.  We have a special School Council board which showcases all the work we do and by leading regular whole school assemblies everyone can become involved and understand our work.  In 2022 for example, we worked hard to explain why the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee was such a momentous event and decided to commemorate it by supporting the Queen’s Green Canopy.  We planted 3 new fruit trees (with the help of our Head Gardeners) so that Chef Nick make us delicious desserts for lunch!  We also signed every pupil up for the Platinum Jubilee Junior Foresters award run by the Royal Forestry Society ….. and we all passed!
